He was born to Gowri Amma and Govindan Nair on December 23, 1906 in Ernakulam District, Kerala, India. He was the fifth amongst the children. He received the inaugural Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Poetry in 1959.

He also wrote a biography of Sundara Mathan titled Asmitha Sundara Pillai, a compilation of the author's letters and other historical documents. The book was published in 1965. He wrote a piece titled "Poem in Memory of V. V. Soman" for a one-man literary exhibition staged by the All India Short Story Writers' Association in the 1970s. He also translated the Malayalam version of the epic poem Ramayana from Sanskrit to Malayalam, which was published in 1963, and helped popularize the short story genre in Malayalam.
